Shut Up and Listen by Tilman Fertitta and Jim Gray - Notes

Deepak Shukla’s Notes On Shut Up and Listen by Tilman Fertitta and Jim Gray :

Hey guys,

I finished reading this book on the 10th January 2021.

Here’s a synopsis of the book I grabbed from Amazon:

“One of the few true leadership road maps to the summit of career success and satisfaction, featuring concise learn-and-repeat principles for entrepreneurs, leaders of large companies, managers, and executives at any level.”

And here are my actual notes I took whilst I was listening to this on Audible:

  • When things are bad to eat the weak and grow your business
  • Don’t choose to quit. Choose to keep punching
  • Don’t overreact
  • Sometimes no decision is the best decision at all
  • Change change change
  • Top performance should be expected. Not something that’s out of the ordinary
  • Be a great teacher
  • Assume it will go wrong
  • Don’t assume anything
  • Take the time to listen to everyone around you
  • Surround yourself with people that are smarter than you are
  • Know what you know and know what you don’t know
  • If you want to lead. Listen first.
  • Define success by being more successful at something than anyone else
  • Surround yourself and work with others who are every bit as motivated as you. Never become complacent
  • What do you want to own that you currently don’t that makes you feel poor
  • Feeling poor is a powerful way to feel hungry
  • If your offer is fair be prepared to walk away from deals and let the deal chase you
  • Borrow money when you don’t need it because when you do need it you might not have it
  • When things are bad eat the weak and grow your business
  • Remember in good times things go bad and in bad times things go good so always be prepared for both
  • Partner with people with complementary skill sets
  • Make friends with partners in business they will help you out more than anyone
  • Sometimes you can’t avoid the fire it’s just the way you put it out that matters
  • Overdeliver. Eg Sell 45 minutes but deliver 55. Offer 30 links but build 40 etc etc
  • Apologise and resolve immediately. Sometimes have ‘sorry budgets’ for things you will do if something goes wrong
  • Build in ‘What if scenarios’ – what if everything that could go wrong did go wrong
  • Follow through always
  • Be plappy – play happy 100% of time
  • HOSPITALITY is
  • Things you have to know
  • I don’t fear anything but I worry about everything
